Shaun’s Story

Shaun is 19 years old and is Action for Children Time Bank account holder in Upper Nithsdale.

“I have been attending the Upper Nithsdale family project for 3 years. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 6 years old; and as a young adult I struggled with sometimes making positive choices with positive consequences. I had three breach of the peace charges which resulted in me getting ‘electronically tagged’ for three months! During the three months I sought support at the Upper Nithsdale family project and met Amanda who motivated me to make changes. With Amanda’s full support, I applied to help in the VP Furniture project as a delivery assistant, but was turned down, this knocked my self-esteem. So I spoke to Amanda about other opportunities in the community, and was offered some grass cutting for the Church of Scotland and the Village Pride allotment project through the Time Bank.”

“As a Time Bank volunteer I have provided 35 hrs and received 21 hrs back. With time banking I am now receiving support from another Time Bank member who is a retired school teacher. She is supporting me with my numeracy skills for my future development. I now have training certificates in First Aid, Manual Handling, Sharps & Needlesticks and Brush Cutter & Trimming which has helped me gain new skills for job opportunities. At present I am doing 6- 10 hours a week volunteering and get great benefit from it, as well as on-going support for filling out forms and job applications. I am now able to successfully complete job applications on my own, and I have applied to join the army.”
